A trip to Chicago is planned for early spring 2007. And what would a trip to Chicago be without a visit to its birthplace? The Chicago Portage NHS is the only place “where you can stand on the same ground walked upon by the explorers, early settlers and creators of Chicago.” All other sites related to the founding of the city are buried under roads or sewage treatment plants.

The Chicago Portage NHS boasts that it is only one of two national historic sites in Illinois and one of just a few in the country that is not owned by the National Park Service. We are curious to see how this Site compares to our other midwestern reviews.
